  3. Land-area measure used for population density, source-rounded
  4. Population density using land area excluding inland water

Reference text

Population density uses land area excluding inland water. The source displays density and land-area measurements rounded to the nearest integer, with calculations performed using unrounded data. Land area excluding inland water, from Standard Area Measurements reflecting January 2025 for England, Wales and Scotland. MYE5 displays the area and density rounded to the nearest integer, while density calculations use unrounded data. The direct country row is retained as a source-native statistical aggregate. It establishes no equivalence with the local-authority, urban-centre or council research geographies. (2025-06-30; source publication 2026-10-01) [2]

Reference period: 2025-06-30; source publication 2026-10-01.

ONS workbook, Cover sheet A10. The datasets are broadly comparable. The estimates for England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland use different data sources and methods. These can also differ across years.

Sections in this chapter (5)

  2. Median age of the usual resident population
  3. Estimated female usual resident population, all ages
  4. Estimated male usual resident population, all ages
  5. Estimated usual resident population, all ages

Reference text

These estimates describe usual residents at 30 June 2025, including students at their term-time address and long-term migrants under the source definition. Sex-specific all-ages estimates and median age appear as separate observations. The underlying constituent-country release was published on 2026-07-14, and the combined UK workbook was published on 1 October 2026. Accuracy of estimates and rounding: estimates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland are provided unrounded. Estimates for Scotland involve some rounding to the nearest 10. Unrounded estimates are published to enable and encourage further calculations and analysis. However, the estimates should not be taken to be accurate to the level of detail provided. Confidence Intervals for population estimates at the local authority level for England and Wales are provided in table MYE0 in this workbook. Statistical uncertainty is lowest immediately following a census, and greatest immediately before the next census. This is because errors accumulate over time as estimates are rolled forward onto the following year. In general, the degree of uncertainty is higher for smaller geographies. Countries & territories

Same-year values. Equal values share a rank.

Sources & method

Ranks cover available countries and territories, using the same indicator, source unit and reference year. Unrounded source values determine ties. Coverage is not a sovereign-country or complete global ranking; national definitions may differ. Missing values and other years are excluded. The information icon preserves the original number, unit and evidence.
